When you’ve tried every trick in the book to build healthy habits and nothing’s working…
It can be frustrating.
You may wonder if it’s even possible for your healthy habits to last forever.
And you may think that it is YOU who is at fault for lack of willpower
Well, it’s NOT your fault and it is possible to build new healthy habits that last!
Why build healthy habits?
Building habits can have a huge impact on your life.
It might be easy to neglect something that isn’t immediately urgent, but building healthy habits can change how you feel about yourself and your life.
You should care about building good habits because it is the cornerstone of success in every area of life and building good habits is one of the most important decisions you can make if you want to succeed in life.
What is a habit?
A habit is something that someone does without thinking because they have done it so many times before. Building habits means following through with new behaviors on a regular basis until they become part of your routine.
Think about how you brush your teeth. You built this habit slowly when you were a child and now you don’t think about it, you just do it.
These good habits will lead to accomplishment and happiness, while bad habits will lead to failure and unhappiness. Some habits are things like participating in physical activity or developing healthy relationships.
The Process for Building Healthy Habits
In order to build a habit, you need to have a system. The system I use for building habits consists of five steps that must be followed in order for it to work:
1) Decide on your goal
The first step is to decide on your goal. You need to make sure that you are very clear about what it is that you want to achieve. Developing your goals for your health should be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-based. Your goals should have a timeline to them to avoid procrastination.
2) Define your action steps
Breaking down the goal into tiny steps is what makes it achievable. Break down each goal into several steps, make them small and start with the first small step or tiny habit. The steps or habits need to be small enough to allow you to do them easily and consistently.
3) Create an accountability journal.
A personal accountability journal is a notebook that you will use to record your daily activities and thoughts. It’s an important part of creating a healthy lifestyle because it allows you to see how much time you spend doing things that are good for you vs. unproductive or unhealthy activities. Reviewing past actions and planning the next actions is what will move you forward.
4) Celebrate when you achieve your goals.
When you implement each step, do a new habit and meet your goals, celebrate. You deserve it! For small habits and steps, just do a small celebration such as a YESS!!!! or a fist bump. Have a movie night or treat yourself to a Spa day when reaching a milestone.
